Undergrad is the first film produced through a new 16-week narrative filmmaking model developed within Tommy J. Housman’s Video Production course at the University of Evansville. Designed as a full-semester production pipeline, the course challenges students to move from concept to completed film within a single academic term—establishing a repeatable structure for future student-led productions.
This initial project served as the test case for that model. From early scripting and pre-production through principal photography and post-production, the film was developed collaboratively by students working across directing, cinematography, sound, editing, and production design. The process emphasized real-world production workflows, deadlines, and cross-functional collaboration, positioning Student Media as a central hub for creative and technical execution.
Following its completion in December, Undergrad was submitted to festivals and has been officially selected for the Indiana Youth Film Festival 2026, marking the first external validation of this production approach.
Directed by UE student Rylan Robb, with Tommy J. Housman serving as Executive Producer in his role as Clinical Assistant Professor of Communications and Student Media Advisor, the project reflects an ongoing effort to expand narrative filmmaking within the University of Evansville. Produced by University of Evansville Student Media, Undergrad establishes a foundation for continuous, semester-based film production and the development of student-driven storytelling at a professional standard.
A first-year film student begins documenting his new life on campus, capturing move-in day, early classes, and the awkward dynamics of sharing a room with a quiet computer-science major. As friendships form and personalities clash, small moments caught on camera start to reveal the strain between comfort, curiosity, and the technology we let into our lives. Undergrad explores the blurred lines between connection and dependence in a world shaped by screens, smart systems, and the stories we choose to record.
