On the night of a 21st birthday, a family gathers for dinner in a home where tension quietly lives beneath the surface. As the evening unfolds, small moments begin to reveal the pressures each person is carrying, turning a familiar celebration into something far more fragile.
The Switch is a character-driven short film that explores family, responsibility, and the unseen weight of everyday life. Set in a single location and unfolding in real time, the film focuses on performance, atmosphere, and emotional authenticity to capture a moment that feels both intimate and universal.
Written and directed by Tommy J Housman, the film was created as part of a 16-week student collaboration with his Video Production class and Jon Robertson’s Sound Reinforcement and Recording Class at the University of Evansville. Shot in one room over the course of a single day, produced in one semester The Switch uses a minimalist approach and guided improvisation to build a natural, lived-in dynamic between its characters.
A father’s quiet sacrifice unfolds during a birthday celebration, revealing the unseen cost of love when survival and dignity collide. Screening May 1st in the Lutz Lab at the University of Evansville and then released for limited streaming.
The title sequence is built around The Switch (Title Sequence) from the official soundtrack and establishes the film’s tone through a restrained, minimalist visual language. Set against a dark gray, near-black background, the sequence uses simple white line art to introduce key visual elements—birthday decorations, candles, a cake—rendered with intentional simplicity and precision. This stripped-down approach reflects the film’s core perspective. The clean lines and limited palette create a quiet, focused atmosphere, allowing the music’s slow, emotional build to carry weight beneath the imagery. Each illustrated element appears with purpose, hinting at the story’s environment while leaving space for interpretation. The result is a cohesive opening that mirrors the film’s broader design philosophy: minimal in form, deliberate in execution, and grounded in the idea that meaning is constructed through subtle detail.
